4 Day Overland Tour of Lesotho & Maletsunyane Falls
4 Day Overland Tour of Lesotho & Maletsunyane Falls.
If you haven’t explored Lesotho yet you need to put it on your bucket list. The mountain kingdom of Lesotho is wild and remote and guaranteed to recharge your soul. Our 4 day tours of Lesotho and Maletsunyane Falls are done in summer and winter. These trips are quite different from each other due to snow and ice in winter and green fields in the summer. Check here to see when we are going to Lesotho again.
Winter is spent enjoying simple mountain lodges.
Warm cozy beds are part of the experience which comes in handy especially in winter. You never know what the weather will do high up in the mountains.
Day 1 is a drive up the famous Sani pass into Lesotho. We do go through a border so don’t forget your passport. There is either a self drive option or you can join me in one of my vehicles.
After a visit to the highest pub in Africa we carry on into the mountain kingdom. Depending on the weather I like to enjoy lunch with a view on top of Black mountain. It is the highest we get to on this trip at 3250m above sea level. Imagine the views.
Travel to Mokhotlong is on a tar road.
We pass through the town of Mokhotlong on our way to our first overnight stop. Tonight we stay at Highlands lodge. After some simple luxury we soon turn off the main road for some 4×4 fun. The Kao mine road is rough but unbelievably beautiful. Lunch is a picnic on the side of the road and then some more stunning mountain scenery before we arrive at Motebong lodge on the banks of Katse dam.
Day 3 is traveling over endless mountains to arrive at Semongkong.
This is a lovely little village close the the famous and stunning Maletsunyane falls. While staying at Semongkong lodge we can visit Margaret who will chat with us about Basotho culture. I could sit there for hours. Also a donkey pub crawl. Don’t worry, the donkeys are quite short. Maybe the worlds longest abseil down the Maletsunyane falls should also be on the list.
Anyway after all this fun we leave Lesotho via Qachas nek.
The last day is driving back into South Africa through Underburg to arrive back in Pietermaritzburg by 5pm. Some people in their own vehicles like to stay a night in Underburg.
That is my 4 day overland tour of Lesotho in winter.
