4 Day Overland 4×4 Tour of Lesotho (1-4 July 2021)

4 Day 4×4 winter tour of Lesotho

We are doing an amazing 4 day overland 4×4 tour of Lesotho from the 1st to the 4th July 2021. Yes that is in winter so cold days in the snow. Don’t worry though because we stay in cosy lodges with big fire places. During the day we check out an amazing landscape where hardy shepherds tend their sheep. The evenings are spent sitting next to a warm fire talking about the day. Join us in your 4×4 or ours!

Lesotho isn’t just another country, it is another world!

This time we are going in winter for a very different country we saw in winter. The land has frozen waterfalls and some snow for a real mountain experience. Read a bit more about Lesotho on our destinations page.

On this trip through Lesotho we stay in cosy mountain lodges every night.

We will leave Pietermaritzburg at 9am on 1st July 2021, and drive up the famous Sani pass. We have to stop for a visit in the highest pub in Africa for lunch and a drink. Then it is further into Lesotho with a 4×4 drive over Black mountain. We get to 3250m above sea level so the views are amazing. Another hour of driving and we arrive at our overnight stop. Molumong lodge is a simple, but lovely place to stay.

Next up is a visit to the highest dam in Africa.

Day 2 is a stunning drive over and around endless mountains. The whole day is about a 5 hour drive and on the way we really see how really mountainous Lesotho is. It is like time stood still here. We have lunch on the banks of the Orange river and then through Thaba Tseka and to arrive at Katse dam. I love cooking and we enjoy a good South African braai while overlooking this impressive dam.

After some pancakes and bacon we leave for a really quite stunning drive through Lesotho. We head towards to the South East part on our way to Sehlabathebe National park. This is our overnight stop but a fun 4×4 drive over Matabeng pass has to be done first.

Sehlabathebe is spectacular..

This National park in Lesotho is a great place to visit. There are amazing sandstone rock formations and bushman painting to see. Maybe a lovely walk to be done here to get the appetite going before breakfast.  Then it is time to pack up and head home. We drive out of Lesotho via Ramatseliso’s gate border and through Matatiele for a 4 hr drive back to Pietermaritzburg.
