5 Day tour of Lesotho
If you really need peace and amazing mountain scenery then this trip is for you. We can do this tour in summer or winter because we stay in mountain lodges. Day 1 is the same as our other trips staying at Molumong lodge. Day 2 is staying in the highlands driving past Letseng diamond mine. It is the highest diamond mine in the world at 3112m altitude. Unfortunately we can’t pop in for a visit. Anyway soon after the mine we turn left onto a dirt road.
This is Lesotho at it’s best.
We weave around mountains and valleys and finally end up at Katse dam. Here we stay at Katse lodge and have the option of a tour of the dam wall. Even non engineers will find this interesting. For the botanists there is the Katse gardens and the Spiral aloe. Lesotho’s national flower.
Day 3 is driving to Thaba Tseka and back onto a tar road. I am not lying when I say that you will be amazed at the stunning mountain scenery. It has to be seen to be believed. You can join us in your own 4×4 or in one of ours.
Tonight we stay at Roma trading post. This town is full of Catholic churches hence the name. Also after an hour walk we can spot some dinosaur foot prints.
The climate is quite different from the last few days.
We are now around 1800m above sea level after being around 3000m high. Day 4 is a leisurely drive to stay at the Semongkong lodge. We arrive in time for lunch so we have time to check out the Malatsunyane falls. They are the highest waterfall in Lesotho so certainly worth a visit. If you are really adventurous you can even abseil down the falls. The highest abseil in the world. Jup.
Also worth a visit is to hear Margaret talk about Basotho culture and the traditions of their blankets.
Day 5 is the day we leave Lesotho. We drive back into South Africa via Qachas nek border.
