8 Day Tour Wild coast and Wild Drakensberg
Wild coast and Wild Drakensberg
The Wild coast and Wild Drakensberg includes the Transkei wild coast is on the east coast of South Africa, between Durban and Port Elisabeth. It certainly lives up to it's name of 'wild'. And not very far away is the wild side of the Southern Drakensberg. Here we can drive the 5 highest road passes in South Africa as well as do some snow skiing.
Our tour leaves Pietermaritzburg via Durban on our way to Green fire lodge near Mkambathi Nature reserve. This place is a real jewel where we can fish, swim or walk on the beach. The next day is a drive through Pondoland checking out the wild coast up close. We end up at an amazing natural rock formation. The "hole in the wall" is over 250 million years old. It is such a great place that we spend 2 nights here to have time to soak it all in.
We do this trip in July so we can visit the sea and the mountains covered in snow.
On this tour we get a close-up look at one of the largest migrations in the world (winter). Millions of sardines swim north from the Cape. Watch predators such as Humpback Whales and Cape Gannets feast. Also as it is our winter we have a drive to Tiffindell ski resort for a spot of skiing and some 4x4 fun driving over the 5 highest road passes in South Africa.
After leaving Hole in the Wall we head to the Drakensberg mountains and our first pass, Bastervoetpad pass. Tonight we stay at Mountain shadows hotel. The next day is a drive to Lady Grey and a drive up Joubert's pass which is the 3rd highest road in SA and on to New England, Volunteershoek pass to Tiffindell ski resort. Here we do some skiing and hopefully snow permitting a walk or drive to Ben McDui. This is the highest peak in the Cape and the highest 'road' in SA at 3001m. We also drive down Carlisleshoek pass to lunch at the little hamlet of Rhodes. We spend another night at Tiffindell and on day 7 we drive over Naudes Nek which is the highest road pass in SA. Our last night is staying at Tenahead lodge before a drive back home.
You are welcome to join us in your own 4x4 vehicle or in one of ours.
